From Xenophobia to Censorship: The Elite’s Strategy to Silence Dissent

In the theatre of modern politics, a sinister play unfolds before our eyes. The elite, masters of manipulation, deploy their time-tested strategy of divide and conquer. They orchestrate chaos, then swoop in with ‘solutions’ that invariably erode our hard-won freedoms.

Let’s be clear from the outset: this discussion is not about isolated tragic events like those in Southport or the stabbing of a British army officer on the streets of Britain. These horrific incidents deserve our grief and attention. However, we must remain vigilant about how such events can be weaponised to push through draconian measures that affect us all.

The immigration debate exemplifies this tactic. Years of inflammatory rhetoric have fuelled a bonfire of xenophobia. It’s easy to blame immigrants for our dire circumstances, for the boot of austerity pressing ever harder on our necks. Yes, there’s a valid discussion to be had about immigration policy in the context of economic challenges. There is a debate on small boat crossings, who is crossing, and whether current laws are fit for purpose.

But we must recognise that this unrest is not born in a vacuum. It’s the inevitable result of a political class that has, for too long, turned a deaf ear to the struggles of ordinary people. The Tories laid the kindling with their divisive rhetoric and punitive policies. Now, Labour, despite their promises of change, seems content to strike the match by continuing down the same destructive path.

The riots we see today may have been led by a vanguard of racists but behind it, there is a violent expression of a deeper, more pervasive discontent. One in which racism and immigration are not the driving force of their discontent. It’s a damning indictment of our political system that it has come to this – that citizens feel disenfranchised that some find their only option is to burn and destroy to make their voices heard.

But let us not lose sight of the real oppressors: the oligarchy that exploits this division to ensure a constant supply of cheap labour and to keep the working class at each other’s throats. These are the conversations we should be having. Instead, we find ourselves facing a far more insidious threat.

“In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of.” — Confucius, Chinese teacher and philosopher

Prime Minister Starmer, rather than addressing the root causes of social unrest, is looking at the suppression of our freedom of expression. Our freedom to question the status quo and challenge the wrongs waged against us by the establishment is under attack. Speaking to broadcasters, Starmer agreed that “we’re going to have to look more broadly at social media after this disorder.” This raises the alarming prospect that Labour will revisit the Online Safety Act, potentially tightening controls on our digital discourse.

Manipulation and Control: The Silent War on Our Civil Liberties

Make no mistake – this assault on our freedom of expression is a coveted prize for the oligarchy and their mouthpiece, the mainstream media. An informed, vocal populace is the greatest threat to their power, which is why they’re so keen to silence us. By framing social media as a “law-free zone” that needs to be reined in, they’re paving the way for unprecedented censorship and control.

This is the crux of the issue. Under the guise of maintaining order and combating hate, our very right to speak out against injustice is being threatened. We stand at a critical juncture where the suppression of free speech looms large, disguised as a solution to social unrest. But we must remember: a society that sacrifices liberty for security will soon find it has neither. Our freedom of expression is not just a right – it’s our last line of defence against tyranny.

This country needs no new laws that restrict our freedoms or our social media accounts. The UK arrest more people for online comments than Russia does and that was before the riots.

In that, we must fight to preserve it, or risk losing everything we hold dear in our democracy. They’d love nothing more than for us to shut our mouths about the ongoing genocide in Gaza, to turn a blind eye to the corruption in Ukraine where billions in aid disappear into a black hole of graft. They’re desperate to muzzle any discussion of the rot at the heart of the British government – the cronyism, the incompetence, the naked contempt for the very people they’re meant to serve. They would like us passive on the pollution filling our rivers or the billions gone astray during covid.

The timing and nature of Starmer’s attack on our liberties is no coincidence, regardless of the tragic events in Southport. Such incidents, while heartbreaking, often serve as convenient triggers for those in power to push their agenda. As Rachel Reeves presciently pointed out eight years ago, our country has long been a ‘tinderbox’ ready to explode into civil unrest. She identified immigration as the underlying issue and austerity as the spark, predicting that this volatile mix would inevitably ignite.

Now, as we witness the fulfilment of that prediction, we must be acutely aware of how these circumstances are being exploited. The riots, while deeply troubling, are not the root cause of our problems, but a symptom of long-festering social and economic inequalities. Starmer’s response, rather than addressing these fundamental issues, seeks to capitalize on the unrest to further erode our civil liberties.

This calculated move is not a knee-jerk reaction to current events, but rather the culmination of a long-held authoritarian inclination. It’s a strategy that has been waiting for the right moment to be unleashed, using public fear and confusion as a smokescreen for the implementation of more restrictive policies. By focusing on curbing social media and free speech, rather than tackling the systemic issues that led to this unrest, Starmer reveals his true priorities – control over reform, suppression over addressing genuine grievances.

We must not allow the shock of recent events to blind us to this insidious attempt to curtail our freedoms. The path to a more stable and just society lies not in silencing dissent, but in addressing the very real concerns that have brought people to this breaking point. Our vigilance in protecting our right to free expression is more crucial now than ever, as it is through open dialogue and the ability to challenge authority that we can hope to forge a better future for all.

Starmer’s response is a calculated move, born from his authoritarian inclinations and shaped by a career steeped in law enforcement, culminating in his role as Director of Public Prosecutions. This mindset aligns perfectly with the doctrines of the Trilateral Commission, an organisation known for its desire to restrict democracy and civil rights under the guise of maintaining social order.

But the rabbit hole goes deeper. We must question the curious alignment between Starmer’s actions and the far-right elements directed by figures like Tommy Robinson. Both, despite their seeming ideological differences, receive funding and support from Zionist sources. Starmer, a self-declared Zionist, and Robinson, a known provocateur, serve as two sides of the same coin – tools to erode our freedoms and stifle dissent.

This convergence of interests between ostensibly opposed political figures should set alarm bells ringing. It reveals a coordinated effort to suppress free speech and limit our ability to challenge the status quo. Whether it’s silencing criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, covering up corruption in Ukraine, or muzzling discussions about the rot at the heart of the British government, the end goal is the same: to keep the populace docile and uninformed.

“The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum….”

― Noam Chomsky

We must see this for what it is – a concerted attack on our fundamental rights, orchestrated by those who fear an educated and vocal citizenry. Our freedom of expression isn’t just under threat; it’s being systematically dismantled by those who claim to protect us. We must resist this erosion of our liberties, for once lost, they may never be regained.

And make no mistake this plays into the hands of the mainstream media. If we are restricted in our news and information from social media we will revert back to the mainstream or at least they would like to think so.

Of course, the mainstream media, far from being a bastion of truth, has often been the source of misinformation. From the attacks on Jeremy Corbyn to the Sun’s deplorable lies about Liverpool fans at Hillsborough, to the Telegraph’s false reporting on Mark Duggan’s death which sparked the 2011 riots – the record is clear. With just three companies controlling 90% of the national newspaper circulation and over 40% of the online news audience in the UK, the diversity of viewpoints is severely limited.

In this context, social media has become a crucial tool for progressive campaigns. From #ArabSpring to #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo to #FridaysForFuture, these platforms have enabled movements that challenge the status quo and demand accountability here are just a few.

Positive Activism

  1. #BlackLivesMatter: This movement, which started on social media, has raised global awareness about racial injustice and police brutality.
  2. #MeToo: This campaign brought attention to the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault, leading to significant cultural and legal changes.
  3. #FridaysForFuture: Initiated by Greta Thunberg, this movement has mobilized millions of young people worldwide to demand action on climate change.
  4. #LoveWins: This hashtag celebrated the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States in 2015 and has been used to promote LGBTQ+ rights globally.
  5. #BringBackOurGirls: This campaign highlighted the kidnapping of Nigerian schoolgirls by Boko Haram, leading to international pressure and some of the girls being rescued.

Highlighting Government Corruption

  1. #ArabSpring: Social media played a crucial role in organizing protests and sharing information during the Arab Spring, which led to significant political changes in several Middle Eastern countries.
  2. #GuptaLeaks: In South Africa, this hashtag was used to expose corruption involving the Gupta family and high-ranking government officials.
  3. #PanamaPapers: This global investigation revealed how wealthy individuals and public officials used offshore tax havens to hide assets, leading to numerous investigations and resignations.
  4. #OccupyWallStreet: This movement highlighted economic inequality and corruption in the financial sector, sparking similar protests worldwide.
  5. #EndSARS: In Nigeria, this campaign brought attention to police brutality and led to the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Social media continues to be a powerful platform for raising awareness, mobilizing support, and driving change. You have to wonder how many of these campaigns would have succeeded under censorship…

Yet now, under the guise of combating ‘hate speech’, we face increasing online censorship. The Online Safety Bill, with its insidious ‘spy clause’, is a stark example of the government’s authoritarian impulses. As Rasha Abdul Rahim of Amnesty Tech warns, “It is not possible to create a technological system that can scan the contents of private electronic communication while preserving the right to privacy.”

We stand at a crossroads. One path leads to enforced silence, where dissent is criminalised and truth is whatever the powerful say it is. The other preserves free speech as our bulwark against tyranny.

The choice is ours, but time is short. We must fight now, with every tool at our disposal, to preserve our right to speak truth to power. For if we lose that, we lose everything.

Remember, as George Orwell said, “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” It’s time we reminded our leaders of this fact, loudly and without cease. The legitimacy of government has never been founded on the silence of its people – and it never will be.
