Billions in Aid, Soldiers Starving: The Ukrainian Army Scandal
Ukraine’s frontline soldiers are starved and forced to drink rainwater, according to reports.
They drank rainwater to survive. For eight months, Ukrainian soldiers from the 14th Separate Mechanised Brigade were left to rot on the front line near Kupiansk, starved of food, water, and medical supplies.
It took a wife posting photos online, not a general’s report, not a government audit, to force a scandal. A commander has finally been replaced and an investigation opened. But the images of emaciated infantrymen raise a damning question for every government that has poured billions into this war: where was the hard accountability?

The army’s General Staff removed an army commander and demoted another after pictures of emaciated infantrymen appeared online. The soldiers served in the 14th brigade, and the two officers responsible for the men were accused of not reporting the situation to higher command.
“Systematic enemy air and missile strikes on the crossings across the Oskil River have significantly complicated the logistical support of troops around the city of Kupiansk. The logistics of our troops here are provided by watercraft and heavy UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles],” the General Staff said in a statement Friday.
While commanding officers of the 14th brigade worked to strengthen air defenses and protect frontline troops against drone strikes, they failed to communicate the real state of affairs on the ground to military leadership.
The General Staff said it was unaware of the brigade’s issues with food supplies and confirmed it launched an investigation into the commanders’ behavior. As for the soldiers affected, “as soon as the situation allows, they will be evacuated,” the General Staff assured.
Ukraine’s Joint Forces Task Force (JFTF), an army unit created last year to lead troops in the Kharkiv region, described the situation as “horrible management shame.”
“This is a consequence of long-term management decisions at the corps level and its interaction with units. At the same time, reports were heard at various levels that the situation was organized and controlled, which, as everyone saw, does not correspond to reality,” JFTF said in a statement Friday.
The Task Force said it’s actively working to solve the problem, with additional supplies being immediately sent to the positions of the 14th brigade; it also urged other field commanders not to hide difficulties from central command.
Britain has committed up to £21.8 billion in total support to Ukraine, including military support, non-military support and export finance. The government’s own figures put military support at around £13 billion, with further annual commitments continuing.

So the question is not about Britain backing Ukraine. It has. The question is this: how can a war machine sustained by billions from the West leave men at the front looking like survivors of a famine?
And this is where the anger comes from. Ukraine now appears to have two frontlines. One where ordinary men are sent into the mud, hunger, drones and artillery. Another where the rich, connected and politically protected keep doing very nicely.
Kyiv has reportedly become one of Europe’s strongest Bentley markets, with reports placing it among the top European dealerships for Bentley luxury car sales. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s GORO Mountain Resort project is being promoted as a $1.5 billion private investment, with plans for hotels and major tourism infrastructure in western Ukraine.
Yes, defenders will say the ski resort is private money. They will say luxury car sales are not the state budget. Fine. But that misses the political point entirely. A country at war, dependent on foreign support, cannot ask working people in Britain to fund endless military commitments while images emerge of its own frontline soldiers hollowed out by hunger and thirst.
This is not an argument for abandoning ordinary Ukrainians. It is an argument for stopping the blank cheque politics that lets everyone at the top wrap themselves in the flag while the poor and working class do the dying.
If Britain is sending billions, then Britain has every right to ask where the money goes, who controls the supply chain, who profits from the war economy, and why commanders only seem to be held accountable after a soldier’s wife posts the evidence online.
Because one image has cut through the slogans. It shows the reality behind the speeches: the frontline bleeds, the arms dealers bank, the luxury market purrs, and ordinary men are left to rot until social media embarrasses someone powerful enough to act.
Every single war, it’s the soldiers who pay…
