Maria Carroll Labour Candidate Carmarthen East @Maria4CarmsEast

Labour’s Candidate for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Maria Carroll as battled against the odds to give Labour an opportunity of not only returning a Labour MP but the first-ever female MP for her constituency.

Maria Carroll’s fight and determination to bring about social change in Carmarthenshire as been a battle. Funding issues hampered Carmarthen East & Dinefwr Labour Party’s effectiveness. However, Maria’s small but dedicated team have pushed to get Labours message out on the doorstep bringing it to a touch of becoming a winnable seat.

Maria is a Corbanysta a Left-wing candidate, she is determined to make a difference to her CLP. With her help, the CLP membership has grown from 140 in 2015 to over 600 and rising. The membership began to surge under Jeremy Corbyn, by 2016 had seen a steady increase.

With little funding to help in the campaign, Maria has had to work twice as hard as some Labour candidates. Her self determination and her own values as a socialist Labour Party member have resonated amongst the constituents.

Although Carmarthen East and Dinefwr is categorised as the 7th marginal seat in Wales and very winnable, Welsh Labour decided to offer support only to the top six marginals.

This meant that both funding and volunteers have been directed to support the top six marginals. This has changed, through the superhuman effort made by Maria and her team it is quite possible she could now turn Carmarthen East red again.

In 2017 Labour increased its vote share by 5.6% in Maria’s own words “because we organised around the manifesto ‘For the many’. Unlike some CLP’s who ignored the manifesto and denied Jeremy Corbyn we stood solidly behind the democratically elected leader of the Labour Party”.

Asked why Maria wants to represent the people of Carmarthenshire she replied:

“It’s time for change! My life’s work has been to fight inequality and help people in adversity. I will fight as I always have to be a truly effective representative of the communities in Carmarthen East & Dinefwr and to do that people will be consulted, heard and cared about. Wherever they live and whatever their views, I will listen. Together we can overcome the injustice of this dangerous Tory government, together people can make a difference”.

I want to put an end Austerity to help make a system that works for the many, not the few to promote Peace, above interference, bombings and war.

I want to be part of government that acts urgently on Climate Change and invests massively in a Green Economy that will bring well paid and skilled jobs to Carmarthenshire.

If elected I am determined to make the lives of my constituents better. That’s why I am standing to be their MP.

2017 election results.

  • Plaid Cymru,    Jonathan Edwards.   16,127 39.3     +0.9
  • Labour,           David Darkin.           12,219 29.8     +5.6
  • Conservative,  Havard Hughes.       10,778 26.3     +5.1

A final push

We asked Maria how we could help win her constituency, a constituency that forms part of the Labour Heartlands, one of the old coal mining areas that still resonates the same values of community that we all still hold dear. That very same spirit that pulls us together in the face of adversity and injustice. Maria told us that for her to ‘bring it home for Labour’ there are two things we could do in this late stage. one, that’s to donate either a small amount of money or two, give our time for just a few hours phone banking. This could help push for Maria past the post and make up the numbers for a Labour Government.

Maria Carroll needs our help if you can offer time to phone-bank &/or fundraise you may like to join this group where we are coordinating this & offering support to activists,
