The Scottish Greens’ Orwellian Purge: Silencing Dissent on Gender Ideology
“In a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” ― George Orwell
Ah, the sweet scent of doublethink wafting through the corridors of power. When the arbiters of truth declare “Your nan is a man,” the fabric of reality frays like an old cardigan. Suddenly, we’re thrust into an Orwellian hellscape where “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.”
The Scottish Greens have embraced this dystopian absurdity with open arms, demanding we “follow the science” on climate change while rejecting biology outright. The grand inquisitors have spoken – utter the blasphemy that “sex is a biological reality” and be branded a heretic, cast into the outer darkness.
A total of 14 Scottish Green Party members were accused of breaching its code of conduct by signing the declaration, which was published online in November last year.
The heresy of signing the Scottish Green Declaration for Women’s Sex-Based Rights – a document so modest, so constrained, it merely states “sex is a biological reality” and that women “have the right to discuss policies which affect them without being abused, harassed or intimidated.” For daring to utter these self-evident truths, 14 activists have been deemed irredeemable threats, swiftly purged by the Greens’ ominously-named Conduct and Complaints Committee.
The document reads…
Scottish Green Declaration for Women’s Sex-Based Rights
We believe that democratic participation and accountability should be our organising principles and are deeply concerned that voices speaking up for women’s hard won sex-based rights are being silenced in the Scottish Green Party.
We know that globally women, as a sex, are disproportionately affected by climate change and environmental degradation, and that their empowerment is essential to our work as environmentalists.
We believe that:
- Women and girls are subject to discrimination and oppression on the basis of their sex, hence sex is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act (2010).
- Sex-based language is vital in identifying and calling out this oppression, and women and girls must retain the right to the use of language specifically referring to female anatomy, for the purposes of dignity, safety and health.
- Sex should not be confused with gender. Sex is a biological reality and is both the site of and the excuse for women’s oppression.
- Women and girls have the right to maintain their sex-based protections as set out in the Equality Act (2010), including female only spaces such as changing rooms, hospital wards, sanitary and sleeping accommodation, refuges, hostels and prisons. Women have the right to refuse consent to males being in these female-only spaces or males delivering intimate services to females such as washing, dressing or counselling.
- Women and girls have the right to: Protection against any discrimination; freedom of belief; freedom of expression; freedom of assembly (Articles 7, 18, 19 and 20 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights).
- Women and girls have the right to organise themselves, as a sex, across a range of cultural, leisure, sporting, educational and political activities.
- Lesbians are, by definition, women who are same-sex attracted and are entitled to organise and create spaces based on that definition.
- Women and girls have the right to discuss policies which affect them, without being abused, harassed or intimidated.
We reject all attempts to undermine or limit the rights of women to self-organise and we call on, and expect, the SGP, along with the wider green movement actively to support these essential freedoms.
Doublethink: Rejecting Science in the Name of ‘Progress’
Conform to the new orthodoxy or be purged, comrades. Utter a whisper of dissent and face the judgment of the Conduct and Complaints Committee – an Orwellian moniker if ever there was one. Swiftly the gender rebels were declared “threats” and cast into the outer Party for personal thoughtcrimes.
The message is clear – uphold the sacred dogma of gender ideology or be rendered an unperson. No matter your decades of environmental activism and party loyalty. Diverge from the orthodox creed and you’ll be burnt at the woke stake.
One of the expelled, 72-year-old David Jardine, a member since 1983, laments “It’s quite clear that the party didn’t read the declaration very carefully or closely. All that it did was assert the right of women to advocate for a series of eight beliefs…It wasn’t a demand that the party overturn policy, merely that people be allowed to speak without being harassed and pressured.”
Another veteran, Topher Dawson, highlights the Orwellian double-think: “They seem to think that anyone who signed the declaration is transphobic. I have friends who are transgender women. It’s simply that to stretch the definition of ‘woman’ to include people who are not women makes a mockery of all the sex-based protections that have been hard-won by women, for women.”
Dawson astutely compares this purge to the party’s tolerance of disagreement over Scottish independence, noting “It’s quite acceptable within the party to express a unionist view, no one will give you a hard time for it…It shouldn’t be make or break but it has become that way.”
The crime of championing modest assertions that “women and girls are subject to discrimination and oppression on the basis of their sex” and that “sex-based language is vital in identifying and calling out this oppression.” The declaration affirms the rights enshrined in the UK’s Equality Act “including female only spaces such as changing rooms, hospital wards…refuges, hostels and prisons.”
It even states the blasphemous reality that “Lesbians are, by definition, women who are same-sex attracted and are entitled to organise and create spaces based on that definition.” Wrongthink of the highest order in this era of compelled ideological conformity.
In the accusations dripping with doublespeak, the complainants are accused of the ‘wrongthink’ of undermining Party policy, prejudice against gender identity, bullying, and being a “threat to others.” As Ross Greer solemnly intoned, the only solution was “that all current members who are signatories…MUST be removed from the party with immediate effect, to ensure the safety of all trans and non-binary members.”
Safety from what, precisely?
A polite affirmation that biological reality exists? That same-sex attraction is a normal and legitimate phenomenon? This mania for silencing dissent has transformed the supposed environmentalist “party of progress” into something more akin to Orwellian Big Brother – ruthlessly eliminating any departure from orthodoxy on pain of becoming an un-person.
Responding to the news on social media, SNP MP Joanna Cherry said: “I’m so glad the SNP Scottish Govt is no longer in a co-operation agreement with this political party which is so clearly a stranger to the concepts of equality & universal human rights. Not to mention science deniers. They are a disgrace & a liability.”
In this terrifying new world where language, biology, and objective fact are mere malleable constructs to be reimagined at will, we’d do well to remember the fundamentals. No matter how sternly the Thought Police chide us, 2+2 will always equal 4. Clinging stubbornly to objective reality has become the highest form of resistance.
Orwell’s immortal words have never rung so prophetically: “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”
