The Great Unwoke-ening: Science Returns to Sex Education

For years, our classrooms have been hijacked by ideological zealots masquerading as educators. Children were told that boys could magically become girls, that feelings trumped facts, and that biology was just another opinion in the marketplace of ideas. But now, after relentless pressure from parents, teachers, and campaigners who refused to be silenced, the Department for Education has finally surrendered to reality.

From July 2025, new statutory guidance on Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) will come into effect, and biology is back where it belongs: at the heart of education.

This isn’t some cosmetic tweak designed to appease critics. This is a seismic shift, a formal, legally binding directive that sex education must be grounded in material reality, not postmodern fantasy. No more gender ideology dressed up as progressive education. No more confusion between feelings and facts. Just the basic, unassailable truth: sex is real, biological, and scientifically verifiable.

This follows a rare moment of clarity amid years of ideological confusion, when the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that under the Equality Act, the terms β€œwoman” and β€œsex” refer to biological reality, a decision that prioritises material facts over subjective identity claims.

This landmark judgment represents a vital reassertion of women’s sex-based rights and protections that have been increasingly eroded under the guise of progress.Β

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has wasted no time in following through on the implications of this ruling. Baroness Falkner, the EHRC chairwoman, has rightly announced that public bodies including the NHS will be held accountable if they fail to update their guidance in accordance with the law.

β€œWe’ve been speaking to the health service for an inordinately long time – we will now be asking them when they will be updating their advice,” Baroness Falkner told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, confirming that the EHRC will pursue the NHS if necessary.

Now, schools have been forced to follow suit…

A Legal Mandate for Facts

This isn’t optional. The new guidance is “statutory”, meaning all maintained schools, academies, and independent schools must have regard to the guidance. If a school chooses to deviate, they will need to have good reasons for doing so. This legal weight ensures that the principles of factual, biological education are universally applied.

The Full Guidance…

Clarity on Biological Sex and Gender Reassignment “Medically Accurate. Fact-Based. Lawful.”

Perhaps the most significant aspect of this guidance is its clear stance on biological sex. It states unequivocally: “Pupils should also be taught the facts and the law about biological sex and gender reassignment”.1 This mandates a clear understanding of biological sex as distinct from the protected characteristic of gender reassignment. Crucially, the guidance instructs schools to “be careful not to endorse any particular view or teach it as fact” beyond the established facts and law. It explicitly states, “For example, they should not teach as fact that all people have a gender identity”.1 This is a direct intervention to ensure schools remain neutral on debated concepts and prioritise established biological facts and legal frameworks. It’s about teaching what is known and legally defined, not what is debated or believed.

The guidance resurrects words that have been systematically purged from educational discourse: “factual,” “evidence-based,” “medically accurate,” and crucially, “the law.” Schools are being told to stop peddling contested beliefs as settled science and start teaching children what is demonstrably real, empirically provable, and essential for their safety and wellbeing.

It’s also statutory, which means ideological freelancing is over. All state schools, academies, and independents must comply with this guidance. If they choose to ignore it, they’d better have bulletproof justifications, because the days of turning classrooms into laboratories for social experimentation are finished.

Material Reality Returns to the Curriculum

The curriculum has been fundamentally restructured to ensure progressive, age-appropriate, and biologically grounded education from primary through secondary school. Finally, education that serves children rather than ideology.

Primary Schools: Building on Solid Ground

Schools are recommended to begin sex education in Years 5 or 6, properly linked to the science curriculum on conception and birth.

Children will learn correct anatomical terminology, penis, vulva, vagina, testicles, nipples, not the euphemisms and invented language that have confused a generation. They’ll understand the menstrual cycle, puberty, and bodily changes through the lens of biological reality, creating an unshakeable foundation of scientific literacy.

Secondary Schools: Preparing for Real Life

By secondary level, pupils will receive comprehensive, evidence-based education that actually prepares them for the world as it is, not as ideologues wish it were:

The full range of contraceptive methods and their demonstrated effectiveness. Medically accurate information about STIs, including HIV/AIDS, and proven prevention strategies. Factual teaching about reproductive health, fertility, and menopause, for both sexes, because biology affects everyone.

Clear, impartial teaching on pregnancy options, keeping the baby, adoption, and abortion, strictly in line with UK law, not personal politics.

Perhaps most critically, young people will be taught to recognise and reject misinformation while being directed toward medically reliable sources. This is what genuine education looks like, not slogans, not theory, but practical tools for navigating reality.

Here’s where the guidance delivers a knockout blow to years of ideological capture:

“Pupils should also be taught the facts and the law about biological sex and gender reassignment.”

Let’s be crystal clear: this is a direct repudiation of the gender ideology that has poisoned our schools. No, not everyone “has a gender identity.” No, gender identity is not a biological fact. And now, finally, schools are being explicitly told not to teach these contested beliefs as established truth.

The guidance couldn’t be more unambiguous: “They should not teach as fact that all people have a gender identity.”

This is a watershed moment. For the first time, government is explicitly stating that ideological beliefs should not be presented as scientific fact. Schools must stick to demonstrable reality, biological, legal, and scientifically grounded, and abandon the practice of promoting fashionable theories as settled truth.

Parents Reclaim Their Rights

One of the most significant victories in this guidance is the restoration of parental authority. Schools are now legally required to:

Consult parents when designing RSHE policies. Make all teaching materials available to parents on request, no more hiding behind third-party “provider contracts” or bureaucratic smokescreens. Void any clause that prevents transparency.

This isn’t just about biology, it’s about democratic control of education. Parents have the fundamental right to know what their children are being taught. They should be able to challenge it, question it, and demand better. This guidance re-establishes that basic principle of democratic accountability that ideologues have spent years undermining.

No More Ideological Smokescreens

The Vitruvian Woman
The Vitruvian Woman

Let’s call this what it really is. For too long, our classrooms became battlegrounds for activists pushing fashionable theories with devastating real-world consequences for children, particularly vulnerable children. Girls forced to share changing rooms with boys. Boys told that feelings override facts. Teachers terrorised into silence for fear of being branded bigots for stating basic biological truths.

This new guidance isn’t perfect, and it will require constant vigilance. But it represents a decisive victory in the fight to reclaim education from ideological capture and restore a curriculum anchored in material reality, legal clarity, and fundamental biological truth.

The Real Fight for Children’s Rights

Children deserve truth, not dogma, not fashionable opinion, but verifiable truth. They deserve to understand how their bodies actually work, what the law actually says, and how to protect themselves in an increasingly confused and confusing world.

This guidance represents a victory, not for any political party, but for common sense itself. For material reality over ideological fantasy. For the countless parents, teachers, and campaigners who refused to bow to the bullies and held the line when it mattered most.

Biology is back. And not a moment too soon.

Because in the end, the truth still matters. And our children deserve nothing less than the truth.
